a bit of background

Hi
I know a lot of the photos are quite random, last week there was a picture of the supermarket trolleys outside our local Tescos. Most of the photos have been taken within a few minutes of where I work in the centre on Nottingham or at home as the weather is so wet at the moment.
We have an area in the city called the lace market and there are many beautiful buildings there but this one is a little sad and neglected.

although the texture of the peeling paint on the walls is interesting and someone has tried the erase the graffiti.

and I suspect that this could inspire a piece of textile art at some point in the future!

what else?

I seem to have reached a point where I often have a safe photo and a 'different' photo and never know whether to chance both of them or just go with the obvious one. Is this a result of starting to properly look for subjects/texture/colours? Maybe.

On the crafty side, I've cast on a shawl, I'm ready to print out a new lace strip and thinking of looking at one of my old lace pillow to see if it can be rescued.

In the last week I've taught 3 young people to knit and will be introducing bobbin lace to another youngster this week. I may even get the spinning wheel out again!!

This is today's alternative photo...not sure about it but interesting idea....

A couple of mistakes, more from being out of practise than anything

13/365 expanded

Just a little explanation, today's photos were taken through the window of record shop down an alley way in the city centre. My original plan was to post a photo of the alley but these caught my eye instead.

I will probably go back and play around with the alleyway at some point in the future but for now it looks a little like this.

couldn't make up my mind about these, I think it's the mix of bands on the labels/covers that attracted me.

I'm having fun :-)

I'm really enjoying the photo a day challenge although it may be boring some of you by now. It's making me think of subjects and unusual angles, meaning that I am using my brain for something other than my day job!!

The first lace sample is almost complete, I'm pondering on what sort of book to keep it in. This really is just for my own reference and I'm torn between having a book just for lace or having one where I can note down all fibre/fabric adventures through the year.

I could just do the whole thing digitally but part of me wants to go back to the proper sample/notebook that I kept whilst at college, coffee stains and all!! It would be lace, hand spun, knitting etc so would be quite large ...........maybe back to the drawing board....again

In the meantime, I'm off to practise this.... will be back soon with the lace update :-)

quick lace update

Hi, I've really enjoyed making lace again, I've sort of got it into my head to sample narrow laces and make up my equivalent of a pattern book to document the lace. This will mean that I will have a note of what the style of lace is, where the pattern is from ( which book, which page) the threads used and a small section of the pricking which will help if trying to match threads if any become discontinued.

I must admit that I tend to be good at starting things.............

We will see how this goes!!

Progress so far

Oh, just incase photo 5/365 confused you, here is another shot.

meanwhile, back to making dinner :-)

Photo 4/365 rethink

So I keep looking at the photo 4/365 then at this one, not sure now which is best so I've entered them both!!

In the meantime, I'm slowly growing a forest of pins in my lace :-)

Thursday 2 January 2014

Trying to get crafty again :-)

First off, the photo 2/365 is a local shopping centre that I walk through most mornings.

I'm planning to get back into lace again so I pulled a lace book off the shelf at random and started hunting round for the appropriate threads. The pricking has been copied and I am will spend tonight sitting winding the bobbins. The thread look very fine but it is the one suggested so we will have to see how it works out.

I will update with my progress tomorrow.

I'm sticking around !

Thanks for your comments, I've decided to stick around a bit longer and I'm also trying the photo a day thing so you should see regular posts even if it's just a random photo!

I sat down, had a think and realised that I need a challenge of sorts to keep me on track, hence the photo thingy.

To be honest, I started with the idea of taking a photo of the glass Santa on the recycling bin simply because we don't really do Christmas and this is our only ornament ! it came from a raffle last year) and it's been hanging around my work room ever since.

Then I turned it upside down and realised it was hollow so stuck it in some dead plants.

Wanting a bit of colour I stuck it in the living stuff !

So my first photo of the year is sort of abstract!
