prepping bfl x texel fleece

This fleece was cheap, in fact the postage cost more than the fleece ! Still its not bad but some staining which became more apparent as I spun the first three skeins. They will be overdyed but will probably still stripe once knitted.

This time I combed as usual then blended further on the drum carder so fingers crossed.

There is about 580gm here so I'll probably prep a bit more tomorrow and hopefully spin it up during the week.

Just a quick update !

 Busy, busy, busy

First spinning demo for two years later this morning, I was going to just sit and spin but we've thrown it open as a demo / have a go session so I've been grabbing fibre and spindles etc ready. I also carded some squishy batts of Jacob and Texel.

We have the van back from the furnishings company, yippee !!

Before photos, this is the original furnishing, 14 years of wear and tear has left the foam almost completely broken down, more so in the five year that we have had it.

After.......

It's looking like new van !! and the curtains are practical rather than about a foot wide and decorative.

Other than that, its been a round of fleece washing and prep whenever the weather has looked good and grabbing a few minutes to work on the big red thing.

That's about it for, I have to dash for the bus so will update further in the next post x

Still having a fluffy time

When I spin, the resulting skeins are generally around 110gm as I prefer to be on the generous side for yardage .As a result I often have combed fibres left over, just 20 or 30 gram, which go into a bag until I get the drumcarder out.

I then blend these together to make batts, the mix of breeds varies each time but this ensures that I get the most from my fleece.

These are spun up as a fairly rustic yarn.

The resulting skeins will have to wait for a dry day when I can wash and then dye them ready for knitting.

Anyway back to my knitting, will update again in a few days xx

Purple

So my goal is to try and blog everyday, take an inventory of my fibre stash and try and get some fibre prepped for spinning so that when I have the urge to spin I'm nit confronted by bags of unwashed fleece. Also I have fibres that I really couldn't deal with a year or so ago but now I have more experience and can work out how to deal with them. I suspect that I also have some that may just head out into the bin!!!

Today the sun is shinning and I've been washing a bit of fleece-more about that later, I've also emptied another bag of odd this time commercially dyed merino that was passed onto me maybe two years ago. I've added some dyed BFL that was hanging around and separated the colours.

So I started with this

Separated the colours into this

Then attacked it with the drum carder!
!

Result 135 gm of soft batts ready to spin !

That s just about it for now, time to find my knitting and finish the mitts :-) Have a great weekend xx
