Remember gold stars?

No, not the motorbike but the gold and silver stars that you would get in your school notebooks if your work was particularly good. At my Junior school we had stars and at Senior school it was boring A, B+, B,B- etc.
I had assumed that most schools had a similar system until Ian bought some old school books home the other evening. In his history books, the marking system was marks out of 20 and if you were lucky you got this.

If you were very lucky you got this.

This is the first time and only time that I have ever seen Co-op savings stamps being used as part of a marking system.

For my non UK readers, you would get these stamps with your purchases from the Co-op store, you could also get Green Shield stamps with your petrol. Stamps would be redeemed for goods.

Ok, that's just given away my age, who else remembers them?

So teachers giving 'incetive prizes' is not a new thing then!!! I remember them, but can't remember what the least was you could get something with. My first proper watch was bought with green shield stamps. My Granddad got it for me, and it had a turquoise face and papent white strap - very seventies!

I remember both well but have never seen them used in marking before - and that's with 30 years in teaching!

Greenies! Those of us who drove for a living will remember always ensuring our routes passed a Heron garage as they offered Fourty-fold stamps! The only snag was lickin'-and-stickin' vast sheets of the damn things!

Gold and silver stars! And coloured ones too.
And a big tick and a flourishy swirly 'e' from one of my first teachers, on our newsbooks: 'excellent'! (o I'd like to see those newsbooks now, 'early examples of artjournals', 'pre-digital blogging...')
Greenshield and Co-op stamps also clear in the memory banks overhere....

I remember gold stars.... but, mostly on the back of my report card...denoting perfect attendance! and it was mostly in the lower grades...

it was a big deal to get them and definitely inspired us to be there each day... what a change in attitude with students nowadays... even at those lower age brackets...

I remember those stamps very well and how gutted my Mum was when they stopped producing them. We didn't get gold stars at primary school, but red blue and green.

I remember gold stars! By the time I went to school they weren't used anymore, but they were used at church...when I was very little if we were good and quiet at church we got a gold star stuck on our forehead...it was just a quirky way the teacher had of letting us know that she appreciated out quiet behavior, LOL!

I remember co-op stamps (and Green shield stamps). I wonder how many parents steamed them off their kids' homework and redeemed them??!!
