Killin - Barnard Castle - Bridlington - Home

After a weekend spent in a pub carpark meeting up with friends we started to head south.

It had been a very wet and windy weekend but about 50 or so of us crammed into the pub and had a good time. Travelling back down to the Borders I kept my camera handy and soon realised that we were following a couple that we knew. You could tell when the rider was chatting to her husband in the sidecar over the intercom the movements of her head .

It gave me chance to play with the camera settings and capture the occasional bridge.

Our last three destinations are all places used as stop off points over the years. First up was Killin so I could do a full wash and clean out the van a bit after the last two or three weeks. We were heading for the caravan club site as I knew that it had laundry facilities, a Co-op nearby for food and a couple of cafes on the high street.

misty start next morning but the sun soon burnt it off.

I love these reflections, they get even more interesting when you turn the photo around .

This sign on the campsite made me laugh.

After a couple of nights, a restock of clean clothes and food we were back on the road again heading back into England.

Our next stop was Barnard Castle, the town getting its name from the castle which is still fairly impressive and offers views over the town. ( which I failed to get a pic of !! )

The last stop was Bridlington for six nights, totally relaxing, walking round the harbour and trips to Flamborough and North landing.

Coffee at the leisure centre, one of my crafty venues

North Landing, waiting whilst Ian was out on one of the boats.

sadly this place is now closed

not a lot left of Flamborough castle

Ghostly post-box topper

Bridlington looking very quiet now the tourists have gone home, to be honest I quite like it like this.

Cobles and Ganseys

Bridlington Sailing Coble Festival is an annual event to celebrate the history of these small boats.

This year was slightly different for me as whilst Ian was out sailing in the bay, I was spinning and talking about British Sheep Breeds alongside Deb from Propergansey who had a selection of old and new ganseys as well as a wealth of knowledge about them.

We spent five nights on the campsite so we could have some time together before things got busy.

I enjoy the walk from the campsite to the town, depending on the time I sometime break it at the model village cafe.

Competitive bunting hanging for the best dressed coble.

all watched over by some of the commercial fishing fleet

The main fishing here is lobster

The cobles are somewhat smaller.

The festval was based around the boat shed which contained displays about the historic boats along
with examples of lobster pot making, lobster and crabs, seaglass crafts and coastal paintings.

This lovely small coble is called Covid as it was built during the lockdown in contrast to some of the boats that are more than one hundred years old.

As Ian was out sailing on Gratitude most of the weekend, I was a coble widow haha, however Deb from Propagansey based in Whitby suggested that I join her on her stall with my spinning and knitting.

a small display as it had to fit into my backpack whilst travelling.

I may have spent some money! I now have a fishermans smock to slip on over my jumper when it cools down and a wool gansey (machine knit)

Deb is a walking encyclopaedia about ganseys and several people bought in old ones to show her, amazingly she can often tell who had knitted them from individual patterns and construction.

I must admit that knitting a full size gansey would be a challenge, I've got as far as the shoulder straps on the sample gansey.

It was a good, busy weekend and after five nights we made a move south to our next destination, unaware of quite how hot it was going to get.

Just a few more Bridlington pics

We ended up having five nights on the campsite at Bridlington, lazy days spent walking the cliffs into town, drinking coffee, catching up with the gossip and scouring the charity shops for bargains.

The weather was cold but mainly dry, not too windy but we didn't bother with the kites.

We spotted this sign in the window of Boyes Department store and had to investigate.

Interesting use of audio cassettes, I also spotted some textiles.

All in all it was an interesting window display.

On the subject of shops, during our first visit we spotted a traditional clothing shop on the high street. I remember taking photos as it had just closed down but still held stock and peering through the windows we could see the old wooden display cabinets. I took photos of the frontage but can't find them at the moment.
Nowadays the shop is empty and has been up for sale for some time.

However this time we were lucky and were able to go into the store to have a look round at the fittings that were left.

I would love to have these units in my craft room !

A last walk round before returning home, the last few photos then its time to plan the next getaway.
